First Communion and First Penance

FAQ:

When should I begin taking my child to Mass?

Children need to be exposed to Sunday worship from their earliest years. They should attend Mass regularly each Sunday even as babies. Many parents are nervous that their young children will not “behave” for one hour of worship. Our parish community is a family and young children need to have the exposure to their “family” or they will forever be seen as strangers. They need to be exposed to the sights, sounds, smells and rituals of Mass. Gradually, through love and patience, they will learn proper behavior and responses. Our parish community rejoices at the sight of our youngest members. Their presence at Mass each week assures us of our future.

When should I start my child in the parish Religious Education program?

Most religious educators would agree that the earlier the better. Our parish begins it’s “formal” formation program in the Kindergarten level. However, parents should be exposing their children to daily prayer and bible stories about Jesus at a much earlier age.

What prayers should my child know before entering the program in Kindergarten?

Children should know how to make the Sign of the Cross, and at least be exposed to the Our Father and Hail Mary (browse through our page on prayers for more ideas).

When will my child receive First Holy Communion?

When a child has reached the 2nd grade level, we will begin preparing them for the reception of the Sacraments of First Penance and First Communion. First Penance will be celebrated in the season of Lent and First Holy Communions will be celebrated in the weeks following Easter.

What is the Sacrament of Penance?

The Sacrament of Penance is a sacrament of healing. In our lives we often sin against God and against each other. This sacrament offers us a way of coming to God, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation. Formally known as “confession.”
